Are We Done Yet?
I don't think about having Christmas photos taken of the kids until it is way too late. But I'm also not really a big fan of the posed picture for kids anyway, because it just doesn't look natural. The best pictures I have of my kids are all just random shots. I'm not much of a photographer, but they're great subjects, so once in a while I get lucky.
Not so this time. I tried one morning to get the kids to pose for me in front of the fireplace and the tree and they kept giving me these really forced, cheesy grins, during which they would say "Cheese!!" really loudly and be looking out the window or down at their hands. I tried to keep it light, told them to just relax and think about fun things and Santa and presents and all that, but that only distracted them and I kept trying to put them back into their "spots" and hold their positions. I'm not sure what I was thinking. Needless to say it did not work out. This I think was the last picture I took before calling it quits. David looks as though he's listening to a tired old car salesman and he's ready to walk off the lot and Sofia looks like a despondent teenager. Somehow I don't think I captured their essence.
Next year I'll use professionals for sure. Just someone remind me during the month of October.

Oh Kristen. Oh. That is the cutest thing I have seen today. Your son appears to be about thirty years old, though. How old are you anyway? ;)

Aw - they look like they're humoring you so they can go blog about it later.

Melissa- That's so funny you said that because Ernesto walked in the office as I was posting this, saw the photo and said, "My God, they both look like they're 30!" As for me, I'm 30, going on 16 of course.
Lyss- No doubt. They humored me quite a bit, actually, I just couldn't get the shot. Speaking of 30-somethings, Happy Birthday!

Heck, I love this picture! Despite the fact they look like they are 30. It's timeless. I think Sofia looks introspective and David looks patient.

I wish I could say that when you have your third child, it'll only get easier to get them posed for a good Christmas picture.
Outside of using a photographer's services, Michelle and I have gone to doing the photos as collages of pictures from the previous year. In aggregate it gets the entire family without the forced "everyone smile at the same time" look. Have Ernesto use some of his elite Photoshopping skills to whip up a card photo.
I tried sending Ernesto our Christmas photo this past week, but I don't know if it got past his email spam filters. You can see our Christmas card photo insert here.
If you're super bored, I did a new album of the wife and kids this evening. Surf on over to check it out...

That photo is the best one I have seen. Brilliantly *real*.
Your daughters hair is too gorgeous for words.

Jenny- Yes! Bored...by that point they were definitely bored...
Scott- yes, Ernesto got the card...very cute. I may piece something together like that for next year because I know I won't end up making it over to Sears in time...
Marnie- Thank you! You know, it's really beginning to grow on me the more I look at it. Perhaps it is a keeper after all...
